Fight in Sri lanka Parliament

Sri Lanka’s ruling party UFPA(United People’s Freedom Alliance) attacked opposition members who were protesting inside Parliament on Monday during a budget speech by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Opposition UNP(United National Party) legislators tried to hold up placards protesting the proposed budget, which they said did not contain enough measures to ease the economic burden of the people. They were surrounded by ruling party lawmakers who punched them and grabbed the placards, resulting in a brawl.

Sri Lankan Police yesterday seized 3kg of marijuana (Ganja) being transported in a bus at Kobeigana, Kotawehera And a Buddhist monk has been arrested under suspicion in connection to the transporting of the illicit drugs(Ganja).

Preliminary investigations had revealed that the monk in question, of a temple in Panduwasnuwara, had been involved transporting marijuana on several previous occasions.

Sri Lankans are dealing with the disappointment of losing the vote to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games, amid concerns it is a lost chance to develop sport in the island nation.

The southern city of Hambantota was defeated by Australia's Gold Coast in Friday's polling, with members of the Commonwealth Games Federation on Friday voting 43-27 in Australia's favor.

Australia has hosted the games four times previously while Sri Lanka was
bidding to host the games for the first time.

Sunil Gunawardena, a veteran athlete and coach, said hosting would have given Sri Lanka a chance to "turn a new leaf in the country's sports history."

Sugath Thilakaratne, an athlete who a bronze medal in 1998 games, agreed it is a lost chance to boost Sri Lankan sports.

2018 දී පැවත්වීමට නියමිත පොදු රාජ්‍ය මණ්ඩලීය ක්‍රීඩා උළෙල ලංකාවේ හම්බන්තොට පැවත්වීම සඳහා දැඩි උත්සාහයක යෙදුනු වත්මන් රජයේ සිහිනය බොඳවී ගියේ වැඩි ඡන්ද 36 කින් ඔස්ට්‍රේලියාවට එම අවස්ථාව උදාවීම නිසාය.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට ඡන්ද 27 ක්ද, ඔස්ට්‍රේලියාවට ඡන්ද 43 ක්ද ලැබුනා.

මෙම අවස්ථාව ලබාගෙනීම සඳහා ශ්‍රී ලංකා රජය අති විශාල වියදමක්ද දැරීය.

The European Union has expressed concern over Sri Lanka's move to block certain anti-government websites, days after the US demanded that Colombo respect freedom of expression.

"The EU considers that freedom of press forms is an integral part of any democratic system. The EU therefore believes that the media should be allowed to operate independently," an official statement by EU heads of diplomatic missions here, said.

The Sri Lankan ministry of media had on Saturday ordered news websites publishing reports about Sri Lanka to obtain accreditation from the information department.

Over the last two days several websites have been blocked including Lankawaynews.com, which is said to be Opposition UNP''s official website.

The Ministry of Mass Media and Information had said it was "receiving many complaints from various individuals who have been subjected to defamation and character assassination by certain reports published in several websites".

The President, ministers, and senior public officials have come under attacks and deliberate character assassination campaigns in such reports, it added.

Sri Lanka has already blocked anti-government websites .

The US embassy had this week said that freedom of expression, including unfettered access to Internet news websites, was a basic right which must be respected by Sri Lankan authorities. (PTI)

Describing India's concerns on safety of its fishermen as having fallen on 'deaf ears' of Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa on Monday asked the Centre to take a "strong stand" against Sri lanka and "convey its serious apprehension through tough words and action".

In a letter to Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, she said the attacks should be viewed as a national issue and not as an isolated problem of Tamil Nadu. "I request you to kindly take a strong stand against the government of Sri Lanka with regard to such attacks on our fishermen and convey your serious apprehension through tough words and action"

Jayalalithaa said there had been over 22 incidents of attacks of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Lankan authorities since May this year and six major ones during the past one month.

"Sri lanka 's Police department was politicalized, there is no respect between the police and the public. police attacks people and people attacks police. then police fights with police.. not only that, politicians fights with politicians, politicians carrying out shooting against each other.

At present police fail to establish law and order in the country.

Some people and politicians have taken the law into their own hands."
